Tornadoes and Floods Descend Upon Oklahoma City Area

Fire damage claims

Throughout the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, victims of a recent bout of severe weather are sifting through the rubble and trying to pick up the pieces.

According to CBS News, a 51-twister outbreak across Tornado Alley brought two tornadoes and flash flooding to Oklahoma City throughout the week of Thursday, May 7, causing significant flood damage to homes and businesses alike. In the suburban community of Bridge Creek, a tornado destroyed some 25 homes. The tornadoes forced Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers World Airport to evacuate as a safety measure.

After five to eight inches of rain fell over the area, the city issued a flash flood emergency for the first time in its history. One 42-year-old woman died during the flooding, drowning in her home’s storm shelter, with several other injuries reported as well. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol received a number of emergency calls Wednesday night for drivers stranded in their vehicles on the road, CBS News reported.

The floods, which the National Weather Service called “deadly and dangerous,” wreaked havoc on homes across the area. While flooding can cause significant damage, most homeowner’s insurance policies don’t offer coverage for flood damage, meaning homeowners in at-risk areas should purchase a separate flood insurance policy.

Meteorologists and law enforcement officials alike say this is far from the last instance of severe weather Oklahoma will see throughout the coming weeks.

“The conditions are right; it’s the right time of year,” Oklahoma Police Sergeant Gary Knight said. “There are just a lot of things that make you think over the next three days there will probably be big tornadoes across the southern Plains.”
