Some of the coolest nautical home decorations you can deck your house with are, without a doubt, pieces of pirate decor. The best of which has definitely got to be the pirate flag.
What you may not know about these unique pieces of pirate decor is that each flag is different. Every pirate had his or her own, unique skull-and-crossbones, which allowed other ships to identify them.
So if you’re going to get these historic, nautical decorations — which you most definitely should if you’re planning a nautical theme for your home — then you’d be wise to know whose flag it is you have flying.
Here are just a few of the most famous pirate decorative flags around.
Edward “Blackbeard” Thatch was all about scare tactics. It’s said that he used to put lit fuses in his beard, which would then wreath him in a black smoke, giving him a demonic appearance. His flag was also designed to strike terror in the hearts of other vessels. This piece of pirate decor featured a white, horned skeleton holding an hourglass in one hand and a spear, which was aimed at a heart, in the other.
Black Bart’s Flag.
“Black Bart” Roberts hated the islands of Barbados and Martinique, because their colonial governors had set armed ships out to capture him once. So great was his hatred that he designed his flag to symbolize it. The black flag featured a white pirate, which represented Black Bart, standing on top of two skulls. Beneath the skulls were the initials: ABH and AMH. They stood for “A Barbadian’s Head” and “A Martinico’s Head.”
Calico Jack’s Flag.
John “Calico Jack” Rackham’s career as a pirate might have only lasted for only two years, but he certainly made waves in that short period of time. Firstly, there were two women counted among his crew at a time when it was incredibly scandalous for women to wield cutlasses and pistols. Secondly, his pirate flag was one of the coolest, and will likely be the pirate decor you most want. It bears a simple skull with two cutlasses crossed beneath it. Though there were other, more famous pirates out there, his flag became one of the most notorious, and definitely a piece of pirate decor to have.
If you’re going to get pirate decor, you need to get pirate flags — just be sure to know whose flag it is that you’re flying. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments.
